A grade can hide ten different skill levels
Children do not have one mysterious ‘pace.’ They can be ahead in one skill and missing a prerequisite in another.

Averages are useful, and incomplete
A subject grade combines many things: different skills, assignments, test formats, language demands and sometimes participation or homework. It helps a school summarise performance. It does not tell a learner exactly what to do next.
Imagine two children with the same mathematics grade. One understands concepts but makes avoidable calculation errors. The other calculates fluently but does not understand fractions. Giving both the same extra worksheet is unlikely to solve both problems.
Growth needs a map
A useful learning profile separates achievement from growth and breaks a subject into skills. It marks what is secure, what is developing, which prerequisite is blocking progress and which challenge is ready next. The map should change when new evidence arrives.
Norm-referenced assessments can add context by comparing achievement and growth with large samples. They are still only one source of evidence. Observation, work samples and independent retrieval matter too.
Personalisation means different next steps
The point is not to isolate every child behind a screen. It is to personalise the part of learning that benefits from a different sequence, then bring children together for the parts that benefit from collaboration: discussion, leadership, making and shared challenge.
That is the two-part Foundry model. Each child’s academic route can adapt without pretending that social growth is an individual software problem.
Different levels do not require different rooms
Personalised academic work is sometimes mistaken for permanent isolation. That would solve one problem by creating another. Children can work on different skill missions in the same space, supported by the same coach and connected by the same culture of effort. One may be repairing fraction meaning while another moves into algebra. Neither needs to be labelled the smart child or the struggling child. They are simply working on the next useful thing.
The group returns to the centre of the experience after lunch. Workshop roles can also differ without becoming unequal. An older student might lead a route plan while a younger student owns observation or equipment. The relevant question is not whether everyone completes the same task. It is whether every child has work that matters, enough challenge to grow and a way to contribute to something larger than their individual dashboard.
